Una (not her real name), a member of Lalang, explained how important water is for their everyday needs: “We need water for cooking, cleaning, washing clothes, and most importantly, drinking. We used to rely on rainwater but because of El Nino, our containers are now empty.”
The local government’s help with providing clean water does not reach far areas like theirs. This situation puts their health at risk as they face urinary tract infections and dehydration more frequently—especially during menstruation—which makes life even harder for women in these communities.
Waling (not her real name), another member from Lalang said: “We can manage many household tasks and even stop going to school if needed. But not having easy access to clean water during El Nino is really too much.”
The lack of enough clean water disrupts their daily lives and affects the well-being of these communities. Immediate action is necessary from authorities and others involved to address this problem before it gets worse.
Lalang Hu Mga Laga urgently asks for help and support to overcome this severe shortage of clean water they are facing during El Nino. Quick measures, such as finding alternative water sources or improving infrastructure, need to be taken to ensure they have a reliable supply of clean water.
It is important for local government bodies, non-governmental organizations, and concerned individuals to work together and provide immediate relief. Long-term solutions should also be developed to reduce the impact of El Nino on the lives of these communities.
Lalang members’ struggle with a lack of clean water during El Nino highlights an urgent issue affecting vulnerable communities. Hopefully, authorities can improve the health and well-being of communities suffering from the severe effects of El Nino.
